Why are we publishing earnings
All GP practices are required to declare the mean earnings (e.g. average pay) for GPs working to deliver NHS services to patients at each practice.
GPs do not work under standardised contracts/funding. Practice income various greatly from area to area. Publishing earnings allows greater transparency over what your GP earns.
How are GPs paid?
GPs are independent contractors working for the NHS, and do not receive a salary. Each practice has individual funding, calculated through a complex process of national guidelines and local negotiations.
The surgery receives funding for the day-to-day running of the practice, and pays the doctors and staff from this. Budgets for drugs, referrals, and other aspects of patient care are completely separate, and staff wages have no impact on these budgets.
GP funding
The average GP practice receives around £136 per patient per year to provide GP services.
Springfield Surgery receives £95.43 per patient per year.
Springfield earnings
The average pay for GPs working in Springfield Surgery in the last financial year [2022/23] was £56,043 before tax and National Insurance. This is for 3 full time GPs and 4 part time GPs who worked in the practice for more than six months.
